Fluorite at Astro Gallery of Gems

Buy Fluorite Online: Colour Zoned Crystals from Hunan, Asturias and the Classic American Mines

No mineral wears more colours than fluorite, and no mineral explains the idea of locality better: the same calcium fluoride grows grape purple in Spain, emerald green in Hunan, navy blue in Inner Mongolia and honey yellow in Asturias. Astro Gallery of Gems has 62 fluorite pieces live in this collection, led by Chinese mines, Yaogangxian, Xianghualing and Shangbao in Hunan among them, with the Spanish classics of the Asturias coast, English material from Weardale, the American benchmarks of Elmwood, Tennessee and Cave-in-Rock, Illinois, and a museum grade pink from the high Pakistani mountains at the top. Polished rainbow points hold the accessible end. Live prices are shown on every listing. This page covers the colour science, the localities, and the single structural fact that governs fluorite care: it cleaves, perfectly, in four directions.

The Colour Map: What Each Hue Says About Where It Grew

ColourWhere it comes from in this collection, and what to expect
PurpleThe signature hue. Grape cubes from the Berbes district of Asturias, saturated crystals from Elmwood in Tennessee, and Chinese material from Shangbao and the De'an mine in Jiangxi, often with internal zoning that deepens toward the edges.
GreenHunan's speciality: gemmy cubo-octahedra from Yaogangxian and Xianghualing, sometimes perched with quartz or calcite. The colour most associated with modern Chinese fluorite at competition level.
BlueThe scarce one. Navy crystals over stalactitic quartz from the Huanggang deposit of Inner Mongolia, and the famous deep blue Fujian material nicknamed tanzanite fluorite for its colour alone.
YellowHoney and amber cubes from the Moscona mine near Solis, Asturias, and barite associated crystals from Cave-in-Rock, Illinois, the historic heart of American fluorspar mining.
PinkThe alpine rarity, here as octahedral crystals with muscovite from Chumar Bakhoor in the Hunza Valley of Pakistan. Pink fluorite at cabinet size is a museum conversation everywhere it appears.
Banded rainbowMulti colour zoning in one crystal or one polished point, purple through green through blue. The polished Mexican and Chinese points at the accessible end of this page exist to show it off.

The Species File: Zoning, Fluorescence and That Cleavage

What a specialist would tell you across the counter

Fluorite is calcium fluoride, soft enough to scratch with a knife and structured enough to break with terrifying neatness. Three facts explain almost everything about buying and keeping it.

Colour zoning
Trace elements and natural radiation paint fluorite in layers as it grows, so one crystal can hold several colours in nested bands. Zoning is prized, and it is also the quickest authenticity check: dye cannot fake internal geometry.
Fluorescence
The word fluorescence was coined from fluorite. Many pieces glow blue violet under ultraviolet light, an effect worth testing at home for the theatre of it alone.
Cleavage
Fluorite parts perfectly along four octahedral planes. A sharp knock does not chip it so much as open it, cleanly, along a flat face. This is why fluorite is packed the way the gallery packs it, and why it should never meet an ultrasonic cleaner or a careless drawer.
Hardness
Mohs 4, the scale's reference point for that number. Softer than quartz and every ring you wear, so it is a display mineral, not a handling stone.
Habit
Cubes above all, then octahedra and cubo-octahedral combinations, plus the botryoidal crusts from Minggang in Henan that grow in rounded purple hemispheres.

Natural or Enhanced: Reading a Fluorite Listing Honestly

Dyed rough and glass fakesCheap carved fluorite lookalikes are often dyed banded glass or treated quartzite. Real fluorite shows internal zoning with geometric edges, cleavage sparkle inside the stone, and it scratches with a steel point where glass resists.
Borrowed mine namesYaogangxian and Elmwood carry premiums, and generic material sometimes borrows their labels. Habit and association are the checks: Elmwood purple runs with sphalerite and barite, Hunan green with quartz and calcite, and a listing that names companions is making a checkable claim.
Oiled and polished facesA light polish on a contact face is trade normal; full surface repolishing sold as natural luster is not. Ask how a face was finished if it matters to you, and expect a straight answer here.
Fade and heat risks misdescribedSome fluorite colours soften after years of direct sun, and sudden temperature swings can open cleavage. Neither is a defect of a specific specimen, both are species facts, and a seller should say so rather than promise immunity.

Fluorite rewards the buyer who looks inside the crystal. Zoning, phantoms and glowing interiors are where this species keeps its value.

Living With Fluorite: The Care Routine

Place it where nothing knocks itFour directions of perfect cleavage make impact the only real threat. A dedicated shelf position away from swinging doors and stacked objects is most of the job.
Dust dry, wash rarely and gentlyA soft brush is the default. If a piece truly needs washing, use lukewarm water briefly and dry it fully; never hot water, never cold shocks, never an ultrasonic tank.
Respect the sunYears of direct sunlight can soften some colours, particularly greens and blues. Interior walls and lamp light keep zoning saturated indefinitely, and an ultraviolet torch gives you the fluorescence show on demand.
Handle by the matrix, over a surfaceLift specimens by their base rock with two hands over a table, never over floor tile. Most cleaved fluorites in collections were dropped from standing height exactly once.
Transport like the gallery doesWrapped, suspended, double boxed. If a piece must travel to a new home, reuse the gallery packing or call (212) 889-9000 for a walkthrough before you improvise.

Who Buys Fluorite, and Which Tier Fits

Colour buyers come first: people furnishing with saturated objects, who are best served by polished points and botryoidal Henan pieces that read across a room. Species collectors come second, building a colour wheel of one mineral across continents, an ambition the Astro Gallery collection was practically assembled for. And locality collectors come third, hunting Elmwood before the pocket generation ends or Weardale because English fluorite carries history the way moldavite carries an impact event. All three meet the same grid, filtered differently, and the minerals under $1,000 shortcut serves the first group especially well.

Shipping a Cleavable Mineral Without Damage

Astro Gallery of Gems packs fluorite more carefully than any hard stone in the building, because cleavage forgives nothing: suspended wrap, double boxes, crating at cabinet weight, tracking throughout. Zoning deserves to be seen in person if you can manage it; the showroom at 417 Fifth Avenue is a short walk from Bryant Park, Grand Central and Herald Square, and walk in viewing is welcome during opening hours, with a call ahead putting your shortlist on the counter with a light behind it.

Returns, in one breath: postmark within 14 days of delivery, original packing, refund inside two weeks of the piece reaching the gallery or instant store credit instead, return postage on the buyer, and transit damage declared by the next business day. The long form lives on the shipping and returns page.

Fluorite Terms Explained

ZoningLayered colour inside one crystal, painted by changing chemistry during growth. Fluorite's defining feature.
PhantomA visible earlier crystal outline inside later growth, common in the green Chinese material here.
Octahedral cleavageThe four perfect planes along which fluorite parts. The reason for the packing, the care advice and the corner shaped flats on some crystals.
Cubo-octahedralA crystal combining cube and octahedron faces, the habit of much Hunan and Inner Mongolian material.
BotryoidalRounded, layered crusts rather than sharp crystals, the speciality of Minggang in Henan.
FluorsparThe industrial name for fluorite, a reminder that Cave-in-Rock and Weardale were working mines before they were collector legends.

Fluorite Buying FAQs: Colours, Cleavage, Fakes and Delivery

Why does fluorite come in so many colours?
Because pure fluorite is colourless and almost never pure. Trace elements and natural radiation tint it purple, green, blue, yellow or pink depending on the deposit's chemistry, which is why colour maps so tightly to locality and why one crystal can zone through several hues.
Which fluorite localities matter most?
In this collection: Yaogangxian, Xianghualing and Shangbao in Hunan for greens and purples, De'an in Jiangxi and Minggang in Henan for purple crystals and botryoidal crusts, the Asturias mines of Spain for yellow and grape purple, Elmwood in Tennessee and Cave-in-Rock in Illinois for the American classics, Weardale in England for history, and Chumar Bakhoor in Pakistan for museum pink.
Is fluorite fragile?
It is soft at Mohs 4 and it cleaves perfectly in four directions, so a hard knock can split it along a flat internal plane. Displayed on a stable shelf and handled by its matrix it lives for generations; treated casually it does not. That single fact drives all the care advice.
Does fluorite glow in the dark?
It fluoresces: under ultraviolet light many pieces glow blue violet, the effect the word fluorescence was coined from. It does not store light like a glow toy; the show runs exactly as long as the UV lamp does.
Will fluorite fade in sunlight?
Some colours can soften after long direct sun exposure, greens and blues especially. Keep display pieces off sunlit sills and the zoning stays saturated indefinitely; ordinary room and lamp light are harmless.
How do I spot fake or dyed fluorite?
Look inside. Real fluorite shows geometric internal zoning, cleavage sparkle and, often, phantoms; dyed glass shows swirled colour and bubbles. A steel point scratches fluorite easily and glass reluctantly, and a listing that names mine and associations is staking a checkable claim.
What is the difference between fluorite and fluorspar?
The same mineral in different clothes: fluorspar is the industrial ore name, fluorite the mineralogical one. Several localities here, Cave-in-Rock and Weardale among them, were industrial fluorspar districts whose finest pockets became collector treasure.
How is fluorite shipped safely?
Suspended wrap inside double boxes, crating for cabinet weight, tracking throughout, and cleavage directions padded first. Report any transit damage by the next business day and the gallery handles the claim.
Will fluorite survive shipping given how easily it cleaves?
Yes, when it is packed for the risk. Cleavage directions are padded first, pieces are suspended inside double boxes and cabinet weight is crated, all tracked and insured worldwide. The specimen photographed is the specimen sent, and any transit damage reported by the next business day is dealt with as a claim rather than a discussion.
