Recently discovered near the Tanezrouft Plateau in Algeria’s Sahara Desert, this rare Rumuruti (R3) chondrite features breccia embedded in a fine-grained matrix, with distinct chondrules visible throughout. Unlike ordinary chondrites, this meteorites formed under highly oxidizing conditions and therefore contain little to no free metallic iron. This unique formation environment makes R3 Rumuruti chondrites especially uncommon and scientifically significant. Rumuruti-type meteorites are named after a witnessed fall that occurred on January 28, 1934, when a bright light and a loud explosion were observed by local residents at approximately 10:43 p.m.
